Future of Funding – Thunder Lizards!!!

This past Thursday, February 18th, my company TheFunded.com hosted an event called the Future of Funding.  The event was a one day symposium that examined new ideas and new models for investment, covering the key questions facing the funding of innovation in 2010.

This was our first event of this magnitude so everything leading up to the event was quite nerve racking.  In the end the event was a great success and it was an overall moving day.  (My only regret that day was that I decided to wear high heals, bad decision when you know you’re going to be on your feet for 12 hours… not sure what I was thinking!)

Below is the keynote given by Mike Maples Jr., one of the highest rated VC’s on TheFunded.com.  He’s been in the business for about three years (yes, THAT’S IT!) and has been able to invest in some of the most world changing companies, ie. digg, twitter, aggregate knowledge… the list goes on.  Below is Mike’s keynote from the Future of Funding.  I will post the rest of the videos of the panels once they’re done processing.  Enjoy my fellow Thunder Lizards!!

Thunder Lizard by Mike Maples Jr. from Adeo Ressi on Vimeo.

…Microsoft raised one million dollars ever Ebay raised five million dollars ever.  The whole idea you can only get big by raising a lot is a myth.  We need to shatter that myth as a group b/c if we’re going to be strategically relevant, we need to be involved with companies in which the world has a high give-a-shit factor and not just companies that are just modestly cool exists that we can be kind of proud of… – Mike Maples Jr., 2/18/2010

The Demosphere – Alternatives to TechCrunch50

Everyone is really excited about the upcoming TechCrunch50 2009 that’s scheduled for September 14th-15th.  A chance to demo your product in TC50 can open many important doors!  However, since only 50 companies are selected, the event only happens once a year, and it costs $2995 dollars/ticket (if you aren’t a top 50) there are many great companies that can’t make it out to TC50.  The point is, if you can’t make it to TC50 you don’t need to be heart broken, there are still many other alternatives to demoing your product.  Below are a few to look into:

Summer of Innovation:

Semantic Seed is hosting a “Summer of Innovation” competition.

The contest is open to anyone with bold ideas and tremendous talent. Whether you’re new to or an experienced coder, you could win up great prizes along with new opportunities to grow your business.

What you win:

The winner on Vator will receive between $2,000 – $5,000 cash and prizes to build a protype or “alpha” version of your application or services, and the opportunity to demo your winning application or service at a Semantic Seed specified event this fall to angel investors and venture capitalist from Silicon Valley. The winner will also become one of the six finalists, competing for the chance to win the Grand Prize of $25,000 or 2nd place of $15,000. Click here for more on the awards.

BizTechDay:

Each year, 1200+ business icons, renowned thought leaders and inspired entrepreneurs get connect, educate and inspire each other over two days with the most practical strategies and innovative tactics on how to best use innovative technologies to start and grow each other businesses.

This year, BizTechDay will be held on October 22 & 23, 2009 at the Hyatt Regency SFO. From learning how to build a strong business brand on Google, Yelp, or Facebook to raising funding for your businesses, you will learn some of the most practical strategies for growing your business. Many of these tools are free and we will demonstrate just how simple they are to implement.

Better still, at our Demo Zone you can roll up your sleeves and experience first hand how user friendly all of these applications are. Then if you still have any pressing questions you can ask our Geniuses personally during our Genius Hour. At BizTechDay we want you to leave not only inspired but fully equipped and confident of the next step!

VentureWire Showcase 2009:

Innovation and investing go hand-in-hand. While VCs, corporations and others with capital are being more selective in choosing where to place their money, technology continues to evolve, creating new opportunities for savvy investors.

The VentureWire Technology Showcase 2009 will spotlight 75 of tech’s most innovative companies – all vetted by VentureWire editors as industry standouts – to give investors, corporate executives, analysts and entrepreneurs a look at what’s coming down the pipeline and some leads for their next deal, acquisition or partnership.

Ranging from the early stages of shipping product to those ready to partner with or be acquired by larger corporations, these startups were hand-picked for their breakthrough technologies and solid business plans and are truly poised for success.

SVASE & TiE Silicon Valley Networking and Product Launch:

This SVASE/TiE Event will provide the opportunity for members from both organizations to network with other entrepreneurs and check out new product launches from hot startups.

Up to 6 entrepreneurs/startups (Please note that all 6 spots have been filled) will have 5 minutes each during the evening, to pitch their products to, and receive feedback from the audience. There is high speed internet access, a microphone, and a projector, and you can bring your presentation on a USB drive, or connect your own laptop to the projector.

Pitching your product at this event will be included in your registration for SVASE/TiE members and $50 in addition to the event registration for non-members. To secure a place on the list for this opportunity send an email to info@svase.org. Please note that the six presentation slots will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Networking at SVASE and TiE is a well established tradition, and more than a few members of both organizations have connected with co-founders, angels and VCs at our events, in addition to service providers and other entrepreneurs who can all help you on your path to success.

Thursday, October 2, 2008
6:00 – 7:00 pm: Networking and hors d’oeuvres
7:00 – 8:15 pm: Entrepreneur Pitches

time flies when you’re having fun, frogs have fun when they’re having flies

I returned back to the Bay Area yesterday after a fun & romance packed week in Seattle/Eastern Washington with my man, Alex Lim.  The time just flew right by.  Time flies when you’re having fun!  This will be a highly uninteresting blog post if you don’t know me personally… but if you’ll be going to Seattle sometime in the near future you might find it highly useful.  :)

Wednesday:

When I arrived on Wednesday evening we didn’t waste any time.  We started the week off right with what is arguably the best Pho in the world at Pho Bac.  Alex is what you call a Pho fanatic.  He eats more Pho than any Vietnamese person I know.  This is his yelp review for Pho Bac:

“Best goddamn pho in Seattle.  I should know.    I eat pho like 5 times a week!  I’ve had pho from every major US city!  I’ve had pho all over Vietnam!  I make pho whenever I can!  :p Yes, its small, somewhat dirty, all that stuff.  Who cares, its all about the quality of the broth, the meat, no clumpy noodles, not too salty or filler…  Best pho!   just don’t go there if you’re a prissy brat, cause you won’t appreciate it, and you’ll take up space.”

If you’re ever in the area and you like/love Pho, you HAVE to try it!  Freaken fantastic Pho.  The ladies who work there are also super friendly.

Picture 11Next on the agenda was a D-List Magazine Launch Party.  Alex was featured as The Photographer of “Young Seattle”.  Yay Alex Lim!

The Event was held at Amber Restaurant & Lounge in Belltown.  Drinks weren’t very very good at all but they were free.  I was sipping on mai tais and mojitos all night.  I had a great time.  No pictures though, :( .  You can check out the rest of the September D-list issue here:  D-List.  I particularly enjoyed reading the cover story about Noel Biderman the CEO of AshleyMadison – a site dedicated to helping married people have affairs.  For such a taboo subject, Noel is surely doing something right since there are 4M+ active users.

After Amber we went to a close by wine bar called, Cellars.  We ordered our usual Pinot… and to be honest I can’t remember what the wine or food tasted like due to the mai tais but I do remember really liking the layout/vibe of the place.  Yelpers seem to like it.

Thursday:

Alex had a photoshoot on Thursday.  I saw lots of interesting things this day since we walked all around downtown Seattle shooting at various places.  One of the coolest (kind of gross) things I saw that day was The Gum Wall of Post Alley.  There’s a HUGE brick wall in Seattle that is literally covered in chewed up gum.  I shit you not.  The shoot ran till 3/4 am, we were all very tired but like always, it’s always a fun/interesting time.  I’ll share the photos with ya’ll when Alex is done with them.

Friday:

Friday was my birthday!  I turned all of 23.  Alex took me to Northwest Trek during the day.  Northwest Trek is a 723-acre wildlife park featuring a 435-acre free-roaming area tram tour.  So fun!  Bears, wolves, coyotes, moose, geese, antelope, bison!  An overall great learning experience!  :)   Do check it out.

^ Me being a nerd

^ Alex on the Tram

^ We liked the way their butts looked

After Northwest Trek we rushed home to get dressed for dinner.  Alex always looks/dresses nicely and just when I think it can’t get any better it does!  I walk into the room and my eyes almost pop out of my head.  He seriously looked so yummy that night!  He took me to a restaurant in Woodinville, WA called the Barking Frog.  Food was fantastic, and so was the champagne!  :)   My boyfriend really spoils me.  What a lucky 23 year old gal I am.  :)

^ barking frog

^ after dinner

Saturday:

Saturday was our rest day.  We took it easy and saw a movie in Bellevue at the Lincoln Square Cinemas Theater.  District 9 was SO DAMN GOOD.  The movie really provoked a lot of reaction out of me.  I felt nauseous, depressed, inspired.  Scenes from the movie kept popping into my head for the next few days.  After the movie Alex taught me how to change the oil in a car.  :)

Sunday:

Alex had another photoshoot on Sunday but this time the model was me!  :)   We drove out to eastern Washington to an area where The Gorge Amphitheater was located.  Coincidentally, Dave Matthews was playing on Sunday night so the area was jam packed with campers.  On a regular day the place is empty which makes it a great spot for photos!  Alex drove to a ‘do not trespass’ area that was covered in weird chalky material.  No one was there, just us.  While we were shooting the photo to the left it started pouring rain!  We ran for covers until the rain subsided.  The rest of the day was pretty sunny.  We went back to the original location and shot there since the concert-goers were all at the concert in the late evening.

After the shoot we drove to Wenatchee, WA (an hour from the Gorge) since it was impossible to get a hotel anywhere near The Gorge b/c Dave Matthews was there and it was also labor day weekend.  We stayed at a cute little bed and breakfast called the IvyWild Inn.  This was my first time staying at a bed and breakfast and I LOVED it!  The staff was so sweet and hospitable, and the rooms felt like home.

Monday:

Monday morning called for some Apple Cider!  Since I’m a HUGE fan of anything apples and we were in apple land it was only appropriate for us to set out in search for some delicious apple cider.  We did exactly that!  After saying goodbye to IvyWild we did some exploring.

We stumbled upon a Cider Mill in Cashmere, WA.  This place was AWESOME.  The cider was yummy and I thought they had a great business.  They even had a lavender blend.  Some fun facts about their cider:

  • All Natural Ingredients
  • No Additional Sugar
  • Stable Shelf Life of Two Years
  • Not highly filtered
  • No Preservatives
  • Artisan Batches

They also had a special apple buttermilk shake that was so freaken good!  :)

The rain started back up again and on the way back home we did a mini nature walk on a trail that was along side highway 2.  We walked around in the rain and took lots of photos.  There were waterfalls, bridges, and lots of tall beautiful trees.  The rain made for a very romantic effect.  :)   The drive back home was horrendously trafficky to the point where we weren’t even moving.  I saw a sign for “Startup”… how cute is that?  A little town called Startup!  :)

photo^ Startup!

Monday was my last night there.  We cuddled the night away watching My Sassy Girl – a Korean Romantic Comedy.  One of my favorite movies.  You can watch the whole thing for free here:  http://www.mysoju.com/my-sassy-girl/

Love in an elevator

If you met the man/woman of your dreams in an elevator what would you say or do?  You have 30 seconds before the elevator doors open and they walk out of your life forever.

I was reading through Dave McClure’s “Startup Viagra: How to pitch to a VC” presentation and was reminded of a lovely love story about how one of my buddy’s parents met. His parents met in an elevator in New York City. His dad walked into the elevator and met his mom. The first few seconds go by and there’s obviously an attraction. His dad told me he was quite nervous the whole time. Dad thinks to himself, “Wow, she’s really attractive, I really ought to say something.” Forget the small talk, there’s only a few more moments left of the elevator ride. Dad finally says with a very sincere smile on his face, “Hi, I’m Dad. You are beautiful and I would love to buy you some coffee when we get down to the ground.” Mom agrees. Score!

If you met the VC of your dreams in an elevator what would you say or do? I hope you practiced your 30 second quickie pitch, for when you don’t have time for lots of VC lovin. VC’s are like sexy women, startups are throwing themselves at them all the time. For the most part the startups just aren’t impressive enough. Every now and then there’s that special startup that will just blow the VC of their feet and score! Just like everyone else, VC’s are open to love too.

Keep it short, simple & memorable…what, how, why. You really want to have your pitch down and my 80 year old aunt should be able to understand it. Think something along the lines of this: “Every single book EVER in 60 seconds!” -Bezos, CEO of Amazon about the Kindle. Short, simple, and memorable! Fantastic too. :)

So, how do you know if your pitch is memorable? Well, that’s easy! Find two of your friends who are completely out of the loop, they don’t know anything about the problem your startup is trying to solve. Have one friend step outside the room and pitch the friend who is still in the room. Ask your friend to pitch the friend who stepped out of the room. Listen to them pitch it, are you happy with how it sounded? Did it sound memorable to you?  Also take a look at Dave’s presentation. It’s really REALLY REALLY great stuff for startups.

our rockstars aren’t like your rockstars

It’s really undeniable, the USB has certainly changed the world for the better.  What a fantastic product!  As a lover of 1)great products 2)the people who invent/build them and 3)the people who successfully bring them to market, I think this commercial is FREAKEN FANTASTIC.  :)

(Ajay Bhatt was played by an actor, that’s not really him… just fyi. The stud muffin rock star is pictured below)

6360_145151292618_98057172618_3465753_431088_nIn the past few weeks I’ve been lucky enough to hear some really great entrepreneurs/CEO’s speak about their experiences at the Founder Institute sessions.  95% of the speakers made some sort of comment regarding how much easier an entrepreneur’s life would be if they had a great product.  That should be the main focus in any entrepreneurs life.

“Save your hustle for developing great product.  If you can do without money, focus on the product. If you need money, focus on the product”

-Scott Heiferman, CEO/Founder of MeetUp.com

Scott makes a great point, and I think that when you do have a great product it speaks for itself and life is a little dandier BUT this is only most of the time.  I think there should always be an extra bag of back up hustle just in case things don’t go as planned.

There are all sorts of ‘great products’ out there.

1) Great products that don’t make it anywhere, that never reach their full potential/destiny of making the world a better place simply because they were too slow on the business end.

Remember the classic example of the Betamax?!  Every business student has read the case study about the time when VHS kicked Betamax’s ass out of the market with some very smart marketing strategies.  Even though Betamax was the better product it didn’t have enough hustle to compete.  The only time most of us ever hear about Betamax these days is when we talk about its sad story.

2) Great products that are great and change the world.

We use them everyday!

3)  Great products that aren’t so great but are made to be great because they have bomb ass marketers/strategy or just got lucky.

Yes, I know the iPhone is wonderful product that has redefined how we use mobile technology, but there are so many other smart phone products out there (in the same price range) that easily jizz all over the iPhone on paper.  Take the Nokia n97 for example… better camera, better operating system, better better better.  But the truth is, at the end of the day I wouldn’t switch to the Nokia n97.  I wouldn’t have Shazam, TwitterFon, UrbanSpoon (shake shake shake)… even though the iPhone crashes every time I use the new Facebook 3.0 app, I’m okay with that.  So go Apple, you really know how to keep people hooked even though your iPhone isn’t as great as great you make it out to be.

Then there’s twitter… need I say more than “FAIL WHALE”?  You all know exactly what I’m talking about!  Twitter is always down but we all still use and love it (most of us).  We’ll keep hitting the refresh button hoping it’ll make a difference. How can you get mad at that cute ass whale?! :)

It’s really fucking hard to make a great product and even harder to portray it to the world.  Your friends and family will surely like your idea and support you but it’s when you’re put to the test can you really show what you’re all about.  You can have a great product and one TechCrunch article can make or break you.  Michael Arrington mentioned that many start-ups couldn’t handle the attention that they got from a TechCrunch article written about their product.  They couldn’t retain or capitalize on the newly found traffic to their site and simply fell apart.

Great products require great people and a shitload of passion to be successful.

Keeping Organization Centralized, Collaborative & Cheap w/ Zoho

In 2008 I attended the Web 2.0 Summit O’Reily Conference that was held in San Francisco with buddy. We were strolling through the expo hall eager to learn about services that could help us build a business. The most valuable discovery made that day was a young upbeat company called Zoho (AdventNet is it’s parent company).

In a nutshell, Zoho can be considered Google Docs on steroids. They offer an entire office suite which includes: Writer, Projects, Sheet, CRM, Show, Creator, Wiki, Planner, Suite, Notebook, Chat, Meeting and Mail. All products are offered through dynamic webpages that allow for rich online applications.

Nearly all of Zoho’s products are FREE. The Professional CRM system is free for up to three users and each additional user only costs $12.00 per user!!! It’s pretty shocking when you compare this to the arm and leg that SalesForce.com charges! I was using SalesForce when I was working at CNET Networks and the two are comparable products. You could also download the Zoho CRM plugin for MS Outlook and have all of your meetings and contacts synced to your computer which then can be synced to your phone if you so desire.

“ZoHo are the makers behind the web based productivity tool set that includes Zoho Writer, Zoho Sheet, Zoho Show, Zoho Notebook, and Zoho Mail. Their new iZoho is accessible through http://www.izoho.com, and can be played with in a regular browser window. However resizing seems to get a little mucky. If this application actually does manage to work with Apple’s new iPhone (the developers unfortunately didn’t have one for testing), I’m sure that many users of other online office applications will be thinking about switching over quickly. As it stands now Zoho has been the only company to come forward and say their online office productivity sets work with Apple’s iPhone.”

Keeping organized can be difficult and scatterbrains when first starting out. The simple example of putting together presentations can be used. We go through many renditions when putting together a presentation. Emailing the same file back and forth just makes things chaotic. Zoho allows you to upload your presentations and make edits. They even keep track of the changes so you can revert to any previous version of your presentation.

The services that Zoho offers are not new ones but we all use similar services. Most of us use Google Docs to share documents with each other, pbWiki to create wikis, quickbooks to keep track of finances, etc and etc. Zoho offers two things for entreneprneurs and small business owners: centralization and collaboration on the CHEAP (practically free).
